“S. Patricia Patterson's latest body of work and first major solo show, Back to the Future, is the result of her 2012 Emerging Artist Award. The Forward Arts Foundation gifted Patterson with a $10,000 grant, which she used to continue the motifs of youth, memory, and nostalgia she often employs in her multimedia works. Patterson mixes watercolor, screen-printing, and bold geometric patterns in scenes that recreate an idealism found both in childhood and a certain kind of consumer-based American patriotism.”

“This week, the Swan Coach House named Atlanta native S. Patricia Patterson as the 2012 winner of the Emerging Artist Award. Like past recipients Ann-Marie Manker, Matt Haffner, Lucha Rodiriguez, and others, Patterson will receive a $10,000 grant and present a solo show next year at the Coach House Gallery.
Long before that, Patterson will exhibit her first solo show, Facing Otherness, at Young Blood Gallery on July 9. We caught up with Patterson to ask her a few questions about her massive watercolors, why she returned to Atlanta after moving the West Coast, and more.”

“S Patricia Patterson’s watercolor Curtain, 2008. The self assured expression of the eldest along with her relaxed posture contrasts so beautifully with the unreadable nothings radiating out from her siblings.”

“The Forward Arts Foundation bestows an annual award on an emerging artist who has yet no commercial gallery representation. The winner gets $10,000 and a solo show at the Swan Coach House Gallery, the foundation’s intimate Buckhead space, both of which are tremendously helpful to artists in the building stage of their careers. The group has an excellent track record; recipients generally go on to establish a fruitful practice.
After winnowing the field to five finalists and making studio visits, the award committee has selected S. Patricia Patterson as this year’s winner.”
